What a Hearing Aid Prescription Can Help With

    • You’ve completed a hearing test and your audiologist has confirmed hearing loss. Now you need an official prescription to move forward with hearing aids.
    • You’ve been wearing hearing aids for years but they don’t sound right. Your current prescription may be outdated or was never properly verified to begin with.
    • You purchased hearing aids elsewhere and they haven’t been working well. You need a proper fitting and prescription verification from a regulated audiologist.
    • You’re switching to a new hearing aid brand or style and need a fresh prescription calibrated to your current audiogram and ear canal measurements.

Why Choose Brilliant Hearing for Your Hearing Aid Prescription in Richmond Hill

In Ontario, only audiologists and physicians are legally authorized to prescribe hearing aids. At Brilliant Hearing, every prescription is written and verified by Eirini Mihanatzidou-Kapoutsis, Doctor of Audiology, using clinical best practices including real ear measurement.

    • Prescription by a Doctor of Audiology. Not a hearing instrument specialist. Not a technician. Your prescription comes from a regulated healthcare professional with doctoral-level training.
    • Real ear measurement is standard. We verify every prescription using real ear measurement, the gold standard in hearing aid fitting mandated by CASLPO. Many clinics skip this step. We don’t.
    • CASLPO-regulated. Our audiologist is registered with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario. Every fitting follows the province’s professional standards.
    • Fully independent. We have no obligation to any manufacturer. Your prescription is matched to your audiogram, your ear canal, and your life.

When You Need a Hearing Aid Prescription

You may need a hearing aid prescription if you are experiencing difficulty hearing conversations, asking people to repeat themselves often, increasing the TV volume, or noticing ringing in your ears. A prescription is also required in Ontario before hearing aids can be dispensed or funded through the Assistive Devices Program (ADP). Our audiologist provides comprehensive hearing assessments and personalized recommendations to help you understand your hearing needs and next steps with confidence.

Why Getting the Right Prescription Matters

Most hearing aid problems are not device problems. They are prescription problems.

No two ears are shaped alike. The same hearing aid programmed identically for two people with the same audiogram will perform differently in each ear because ear canal size and shape change how sound reaches the eardrum. A prescription that skips real ear verification is built on estimates, not on your actual ear.

The result is hearing aids that feel too loud, too flat, too muffled, or simply wrong. Many people live with this for years before finding out it could have been fixed.

At Brilliant Hearing, every prescription is verified. You leave knowing your devices are set to your exact prescription, not a manufacturer’s first-fit default.

What Your Hearing Aid Prescription Includes

    Audiogram Review and Prescription Targets

We begin by reviewing your most recent audiogram and setting prescriptive targets using validated formulas, NAL-NL2 or DSL v5, that calculate the exact amplification your hearing needs at each frequency. This is the clinical foundation your prescription is built on.

    Hearing Aid Selection and Programming

We select a hearing aid matched to your prescription targets, ear anatomy, lifestyle, and budget. The device is then programmed to your prescription using manufacturer software and adjusted before real ear measurement begins.

    Real Ear Measurement (REM)

A small probe microphone is placed gently in your ear canal alongside your hearing aid. We play calibrated sounds and measure exactly how much amplification is reaching your eardrum. We then compare those measurements against your prescription targets and fine-tune until the device matches them. This step is what separates a verified prescription from a guess.

    Fitting, Orientation, and Follow-Up

Once your prescription is verified, we fit your hearing aids, walk you through how to use and care for them, and schedule follow-up appointments to fine-tune based on real-world feedback. Your prescription is a starting point. We adjust as your brain adapts to better hearing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hearing Aid Prescriptions in Richmond Hill

Who is legally allowed to prescribe hearing aids in Ontario?

In Ontario, only audiologists and physicians are authorized to write a hearing aid prescription under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991. Hearing instrument specialists cannot prescribe hearing aids. At Brilliant Hearing, every prescription is written by Eirini Mihanatzidou-Kapoutsis, Doctor of Audiology, Reg. CASLPO.

What is real ear measurement and why does it matter?

Real ear measurement (REM) is a clinical test where a small probe microphone is placed in your ear canal to measure exactly how much sound your hearing aid is delivering to your eardrum. It verifies that your prescription matches your actual ear, not just your audiogram. CASLPO mandates this step, but many clinics skip it. Every Brilliant Hearing fitting includes it.

What is the difference between a first-fit and a verified prescription?

A first-fit is when a hearing aid is programmed automatically by manufacturer software based on your audiogram. A verified prescription uses real ear measurement to confirm the device is actually meeting your prescription targets inside your specific ear canal. First-fit is an estimate. Verified prescription is clinical confirmation.

Can my hearing aid prescription become outdated?

Yes. Hearing loss is not static for most people. If your audiogram has changed, your current prescription may no longer match your hearing needs. If your aids are more than two to three years old, or if they no longer feel right, a prescription re-evaluation is worth booking.

Does OHIP cover hearing aid prescriptions or fittings in Ontario?

Audiological services for adults are not covered by OHIP. However, the Ontario Assistive Devices Program (ADP) provides a grant of up to $500 per ear toward the cost of hearing aids for eligible adults, once every five years. A valid prescription from a registered audiologist is required to apply. Brilliant Hearing is registered with the ADP and can help you complete the paperwork.

How long does a hearing aid prescription appointment take?

A full prescription appointment, including audiogram review, device programming, real ear measurement, and fitting orientation, typically takes 60 to 90 minutes. Follow-up fine-tuning appointments are shorter and scheduled based on how you’re adapting to the devices.
