What a Hearing Test Can Help With
Not sure if you need a hearing test? These are the most common signs. If any of them sound like you, book yours today.
- The TV volume keeps going up, and others in the room notice before you do.
- You hear ringing, buzzing, or hissing sounds that aren’t coming from outside your ears.
- Conversations in noisy places are exhausting. Restaurants, family gatherings, and group settings feel harder than they used to.
- A doctor, employer, or school has requested a hearing assessment for a workplace requirement, before surgery, or for educational support.
Why Choose Brilliant Hearing for Your Hearing Test in Richmond Hill
We are a family-owned, audiologist-run clinic in the heart of Richmond Hill. Every hearing test is performed and interpreted by a Doctor of Audiology, not a sales representative or technician. We are governed by CASLPO, we carry no brand obligations, and we take the time to explain your results before you leave.
- Doctoral-level audiologist. Your test is done by Eirini Mihanatzidou-Kapoutsis, Doctor of Audiology, with international training and years of clinical experience.
- CASLPO-regulated. Brilliant Hearing is registered with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario. Your care meets the standards the province enforces.
- Truly independent. No brand commitments. No sales quotas. Every recommendation starts with your audiogram, not a product lineup.
- Family-owned and patient-first. We go at your pace, answer every question, and make sure you leave with a clear picture of your hearing health.

Common Reasons to Book a Hearing Test
Not every hearing test starts with hearing loss. Here are four of the most common situations our patients come in for.
School or Education
Some schools and educational programs require a hearing assessment before enrollment or as part of a learning support plan. We provide the documentation your institution needs.
Workplace or Employment
Certain jobs in construction, manufacturing, or public safety require a baseline hearing test. We provide employer-ready audiograms and documentation.
Medical or Pre-Surgery
Your physician or specialist may request a hearing evaluation before a procedure, or as part of managing a condition like tinnitus, vertigo, or medication side effects.
Baseline and Ongoing Monitoring
If you’ve never had your hearing tested, or if it’s been a few years, a baseline test gives you a starting point to track your hearing health over time.
Why Early Hearing Testing Matters
Most people wait seven to ten years from the first signs of hearing loss before getting tested. By then, the brain has spent years adapting to missing sound, which makes it harder to adjust when treatment begins.
A hearing test gives you a starting point. If hearing loss is present, early action leads to better results, less listening fatigue, and stronger long-term communication. If everything looks fine, you now have a baseline to compare against in the future.
Either way, you leave knowing exactly where you stand.
What Your Hearing Test Includes
A hearing test at Brilliant Hearing is a full diagnostic evaluation. Here is what happens during your appointment.
Otoscopy
We start by looking inside your ear canals and checking your eardrums. This quick visual exam rules out blockages, earwax buildup, or infection before testing begins.
Pure-Tone Audiometry
You’ll sit in a soundproofed booth, wear headphones, and respond to tones at different frequencies and volumes. This produces your audiogram, a precise map of what you can and cannot hear in each ear.
Speech Recognition Testing
This test measures how clearly you hear and repeat spoken words, without visual cues. It shows how hearing loss affects real conversation, not just a tone chart.
Tympanometry
A small probe is placed gently at your ear canal entrance to measure how your eardrum responds to pressure changes. This checks your middle ear function and catches issues that don’t always show up on an audiogram.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hearing Tests in Richmond Hill
How long does a hearing test take?
A full diagnostic hearing test at Brilliant Hearing takes 45 to 60 minutes. That includes the ear exam, tone testing, speech testing, tympanometry, and time to review your results before you leave. You’ll know exactly what was found before you go.
Does a hearing test hurt?
No. A hearing test is completely painless. You’ll wear headphones, listen to tones and words, and respond when you hear them. The tympanometry portion creates a slight pressure sensation at the ear, nothing uncomfortable.
Do I need a referral to book a hearing test in Ontario?
No referral is needed. You can contact Brilliant Hearing directly to book your appointment. We welcome self-referrals and doctor referrals equally. No family doctor note required.
What is the difference between a hearing screening and a diagnostic hearing test?
A screening is a basic pass/fail check. A diagnostic hearing test produces a detailed audiogram showing the degree, type, and configuration of any hearing loss in each ear. That detail is what allows an audiologist to make real clinical decisions about your care.
Is a hearing test covered by OHIP in Ontario?
Hearing services, such as hearing tests and earwax removal, are not covered by OHIP when performed at a private audiology clinic. OHIP only covers diagnostic hearing assessments when they’re ordered by an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist at an ENT clinic or when performed in a hospital setting. However, many extended health benefit plans cover audiology services in full or in part. Contact your insurance provider before booking to confirm your coverage. At Brilliant Hearing we offer complimentary hearing screenings for all adults.

From there, we discuss your options, including whether a hearing aid consultation or prescription is the right next step. There is no pressure and no obligation.
